Statistics show mental illness does not discriminate, and there are so many stories behind the statistics. From the wealthiest to the poorest, from the city to the country – there is a massive spectrum of stories to be shared.
In the new book by The Rag & Bone Man Press Inc., editor Natasha Bernard and a raft of contributors shed light on the courage, kindness and idiosyncrasies of those who experience mental illness.
Natasha is the first to admit that her story is not special, unique or more important than the next. As the granddaughter of Anna, who suffered from paranoid schizophrenia, Natasha was inspired to compile these stories to increase awareness of the issues faced by those living with mental illness, as well as the families, friends and carers by their sides.
'When I was researching this book I found common threads through all the stories. I hear about the shortage of adequate support, lack of true understanding from some families and friends and the high cost of support services.
'I hope this book inspires others to share their experiences – to share the funny, sad, trying and true stories that surround mental health. These stories will bind us together and allow our community to grow stronger and more accepting,' says Natasha.

'We need stories – lots of them – not about mental illness in isolation, but about the people affected by it, in all their diversity and complexity.'
—Graeme Simsion, author of The Rosie Project
